June 1st 1953, Gonaives, the city of Independence, was born Jean Baptiste Emmanuel Rossiny, known by the nickname of Ti Manno, a top-notch musician, a genius whose talent Konpa Direct multidimensional continues to transcend all generations. Ti Manno was among the best lyricists of Konpa Direct. His lyrics deal with different subjects and expose the problems of political, social and cultural (Neg Kont Neg, Operations, Canter, Marriage of interest). Durant sa carrière musicale émaillée de succès, il avait prêté sa voix envoûtante à divers groupes dont « Volo-Volo », « Astros » de New York, « D.P. Express » avant de former son propre groupe, Gemini All Stars où il a montré toute la plénitude de son génie. Plusieurs de ses compositions étaient le fruit de son imagination abondante. Ce sont avant tout des chansons lyriques où il exprimait son état d’âme sur des thèmes variés et profondément humains, tels l’amour, la justice, la liberté, le mal-être, l’exclusion, l’espoir.
Apôtre de la contestation, sa musique s’était démarquée du cachet à l’eau de rose à l’époque. Elle témoignait d’un engagement sans bornes à la cause de la justice et de la liberté. « Changer l’homme, changer la vie », ces deux phrases résument le but du combat que menait Timanno dans le contexte difficile de la dictature duvaliérienne. Il en faisait sa raison de vivre, sa raison d’être même. A travers des textes d’une belle facture comme « Lajan », « Exploitation » « Asamm », « Nèg kont nèg », « Sort du tiers monde », « Maryaj interè », « Korije… », le samba s’insurgeait contre les tares politico-socioculturelles qui gangrenaient la société de son temps tout en appelant à un changement de mentalité pour une Haïti régénérée.
Dans « Exploitation », chant au titre combien évocateur, Timanno dénonçait l’exploitation de l’homme par l’homme. Il plaidait pour la disparition des inégalités au sein de notre communauté tout en conviant les différentes couches de la société à la concorde. « Egalite, fwatènite, sesa pou nou obsève / pou la vil fè youn sèl ak lakanpay ». Sa voix s’était également élevée contre le harcèlement sexuel dont étaient victimes souvent les femmes dans le milieu du travail. « Gen youn seri de patwon se pa konesans yap cheche se pito youn moun pou satisfè santiman yo / yo mande yo fè over time, over time tounen over all… Gade misè fanm ap pase poul travay o Bon Dye ! mesye lanmou pa dwo rantre nan afè travay » Une réalité amère encore actuelle de nos jours, malheureusement. Et « nan danje » laisse transparaître une vive explosion d’indignation contre les traitements infligés aux émigrés haïtiens aux Etats-Unis, en Colombie, au Pérou, au Venezuela, aux Bahamas, en Bolivie, etc…Ceux-ci utilisent le fait qu’Haïti est pauvre pour nous isoler et nous humilier. « yo pran misè peyi nou fèl sèvi de jouman / toupatou kote nou pase yo choute nou ak kout piye / sa te fèm mal lóm gade ayisyen blan nan sevis imigwasyon tap fè chyen devore ». Des pays qui devaient pourtant se montrer plus cléments à l’égard de nos compatriotes se rappelant la contribution d’Haïti à leur libération ou à leur indépendance. Il est a noter que ce texte a inspiré deux anthropologues américains Nina Glick-Schiller et Georges Fouron dans un article publié dans l’Américan Ethnologist en 1990 : « Timanno et l’émergence d’une identité nationale ».
Dans ce contexte, il mettait en garde les Haïtiens qui fuyaient le pays sur des embarcations de fortune en quête d’un bien-être vers des cieux où ils n’étaient jamais les bienvenus (Cantè).
C’est par patriotisme autant que par humanisme que Timanno a composé « SIDA » en vue de la défense des Haïtiens accusés dans un esprit d’haïtianophobie de « porteurs de sida». Et le texte d’Ansy Dérose « FDA wanraje », qui a poussé des millions d’Haïtiens à gagner les rues de Brooklyn le 20 Avril 1990 pour protester contre les menées discriminatoires à travers la Food and Drug Administration, se situe dans le même objectif.
L’amour de la patrie inspirait à Timanno « David », un texte d’un lyrisme touchant à un moment où Haïti vivait sous la menace d’un ouragan dévastateur, David. A la jeunesse haïtienne qu’il aimait tant, il lançait un vibrant appel afin de la détourner des vices et de la réussite facile « ti jèn jan kap etidye / fók nou pa dekouraje se sèvo nou ki paspó nou lajan se supèfli… » (Lajan)
